Rev Up Your RV

November 27, 2011

Way Down Upon the Suwannee River…

Passed over this river today on our way to Tallahassee, FL.  Which was really timely, as I was about to run out of song titles/lyrics.

We had a fabulous time in St. Augustine, FL.  Our RV park was wedged between the ocean and intracoastal.  Our site actually backed up to the intracoastal-which as it turns out was OK because gators apparently don’t like salt water.  However, there is a condition known here as ‘red tide’, loads of nasty bacteria that comes from the kelp being stirred up by storms.  The terrible little particles become airborne & wreak havoc on those with asthma.  Wm felt the effects of it in the form of a sore throat.  Or, maybe he just talks too much!

My B-Day lobster dinner with the Decker’s (including Grandpa) was fabulous.  But I was mysteriously over-served & didn’t really enjoy the 40 minute ride home.  UGH!

We enjoyed a day of boating on the St. John’s river with all the Deckers, including Kevin & Kristin who had driven up from Melbourne.  Some people actually like us! Anyway, the weather was perfect, the company was perfect & we got to hang with the Florida boating crowd and be ‘wharf-dogs”.  Could get used to this…

Drove down to Rockledge, FL to see the rest of the Decker clan (are you noticing a pattern here?) & after our short & sweet visit decided to drive back up Hwy A1A, which is the equivalent of Highway 1, without the hairpin turns.  Sun, sand, ocean breezes, kite-surfers, it was practically sickening how perfect it all was!  Maybe that’s why every bird in the continent heads here for the winter.  Speaking of birds, we have attracted a little friend at our campsite, a cardinal.  Every day, all day long, he valiantly tries to attack his reflection in the windows of the motorhome.  Honestly, you would think he would be able to figure it out by the hundredth time, but no, he just keeps TRYING.  Perhaps that is where the expression ‘bird brain’ comes from.  Felt bad to be leaving him, don’t know what he’s going to do all day to keep himself occupied…

Today we visited ‘Plantation Country’ in Thomasville, GA.  Toured Pebble Hill, which is the only plantation that is open to the public here.  Great tour guide, we should all be so fortunate to have our docent be a retired history teacher-he was fabulous.  It’s well worth the trouble if you are ever in this part of the country.  The house boasts 50 services of china-I don’t think Cathy Frye even has THAT many.

We are officially heading for the barn- the GPS will have a big W on it from here on.  Just as well, it’s way too green & lush back here- can’t take much more of this…

Yours from the road,
Cathy & Wm
